BMCC’s nursing program has been re-accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in nursing, the accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation.

BMCC Celebrates Service Anniversaries of Faculty and Staff
BMCC is grateful for the hard work and years of dedication from its employees for all levels, which include Civil Service series (including Provisional); College Assistants; Research Foundation employees; Gittleson (COA, CSA, CAA); and HEO Title Series. Each year, the college recognizes years of service anniversaries of its employees; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an in-person celebration was not held. Nevertheless, the college is proud to recognize and thank the individuals who continue to make BMCC a great institution.

Virtual Choir President Munroe Shares Leadership Perspective on New Presidents’ Alliance Report
On October 15, BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe served as an panelist on the webinar, “First- and Second- Generation Immigrant Students in Higher Education: What Campus Leaders Need to Know — Crucial Stakes for Higher Education and Our Country,” hosted by the President’s Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration. Munroe joined other institutional leaders including Alan Cramb, President, Illinois Institute of Technology; Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, Chancellor, University of Massachusetts Boston; and Rajika Bhandari, President and CEO, IC3 Institute for a discussion about the newly released Presidents’ Alliance-commissioned and Migration Policy Institute-produced report on the number of first and second generation immigrant students in higher education. The report reveals the significant impact of immigration policy on college enrollments, the implications of immigrant student demographics for addressing racial equity, and the importance of immigrant students in degree attainment and workforce development goals in states across the country.
Virtual Choir CUNY Virtual Choir Videos Now Available Online
Two videos featuring the CUNY Virtual Choir at BMCC debuted October 13 at 7 p.m. and are now available the BMCC Music Department’s Facebook page as well as the CUNY Virtual Choir website.
Ostrowe Professor Ostrowe to Serve on Distinguished World Trade Center Health Program Committee 
Criminal Justice Professor Jason W. Ostrowe joined BMCC in 2016 and served 16 years in the New York City Police Department, experiencing first-hand, the events of 9/11 and its aftermath. Now, as a newly appointed member of the prestigious Scientific/Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) of the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program — which represents over 79,000 registered 9/11 responders — Ostrowe will join efforts to review scientific evidence and make recommendations on WTC-related health conditions, eligibility criteria and research. The committee, comprised of 17 members, includes medical scientists, clinicians, responders, advocates and survivors of 9/11. Ostrowe joins not only with the insight of having served with the NYPD, but as a faculty member of BMCC, the only institution in the United States to have lost a building to a terrorist attack — the original Miles and Shirley Fiterman Hall was destroyed when 7 World Trade Center fell against it on 9/11.

Inquirer Fall 2020 Issue of Inquirer Available Online at BMCC Website
The Fall 2020 issue of the BMCC journal, Inquirer is now available digitally. This issue includes essays by BMCC faculty teaching in China and France and a discussion of fashion and economics, as well as letters faculty wrote to students in Spring 2020.  Inquirer editors, English Professor Page Delano and Social Sciences Professor Elizabeth Wissinger, say the issue also includes essays about the Black Lives Matter movement as well as equity at BMCC.
New York Times Columnist and 2008 Nobel Prize Winner Paul Krugman Webinar October 21
BMCC students, faculty and staff are invited to a free webinar featuring Paul Krugman, recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Economics, best-selling author and columnist at The New York Times on October 21 at 6 p.m. Krugman, a Distinguished Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center will discuss his new book Arguing with Zombies as well as other issues related to economic policy. The event is part of the The 2020 BMCC Economics Seminar Series. For more information and to RSVP, click here.

Share With Your Students: Diploma Survey Due October 16 
Fall 2019 graduates have been emailed a link for a survey asking the name they want on their diploma and where they would like it mailed. This survey closes October 16. Information on how to apply for graduation, how the graduation review process works, diplomas and commencement can be found on the BMCC graduation website. Students can also visit the BMCC Diploma FAQ or contact graduation@bmcc.cuny.edu for more information.

Let Your Students Know: Quiet Study Space Is Available on Campus
Students can now research, write papers and study on campus, as well as access technology for printing and scanning, by reserving a single-seat study space on the second floor of the Murray Building at 70 Murray Street, Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students must bring a photo ID with them and complete the daily health screening each day they visit campus. Instructions on how to do that can be found here. They can reserve a study time here.

BMCC Swimming Pool Closed
The BMCC swimming pool at 199 Chambers Street is closed until further notice, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. BMCC is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for students, faculty and staff. We continue to strengthen our culture of care by creating the conditions under which all students can learn and all members of the BMCC community can thrive—even from a distance. The college community and community swim members will be notified once BMCC is able to re-open the swimming facility. We encourage you to review the BMCC Reimagining website to learn of resources and information to protect your safety and well-being.

Mindfulness BMCC Community Members Eligible for 10-Minute Mindfulness Course
The CUNY Office of Student Affairs has launched a partnership with “The 10 Minute Mind,” a service that provides free mindfulness meditation to all CUNY students, faculty and staff. Mindfulness meditation is research-based, and has been found to reduce stress, improve memory and more. To register, click here.

COVID BMCC Launches COVID-19 Reporting Dashboard
BMCC has launched an online COVID-19 dashboard that provides updates on COVID-19 testing data, community services such as the Panther Pantry, ongoing safety protocols on campus and more.

The BMCC Campus Is Reopening in Phases 
The BMCC campus is reopening in phases approved by CUNY and the State of New York. Phase 1 opened August 26, with access to campus limited to students. Phase 2A began September 16 and added a percentage of support programs staff. Phase 2B started September 30 and added a percentage of administration staff. Review the phases and learn more here

Future students are invited to attend the BMCC Virtual Open House this Saturday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 1 to 3 p.m. to learn about online learning options and speak with current BMCC students and faculty. Faculty and staff, encourage students to download BMCC Navigate, an interactive tool that customizes information for them on financial aid and more. Fall 2020 Annual Health Benefits Program Transfer Period: Now through October 30
BMCC employees can enroll or make changes to their health coverage now through October 30. For plan summaries, visit the NYC Office of Labor Relations, Health Benefits website. Changes will be effective January 1, 2021. For more information, refer to Faculty & Staff 2020 Fall Transfer Period documents or the 2020 Fall Transfer Period documents for Adjuncts. Employees who do not wish to make changes to their current health plan do not need to do anything during the Transfer Period. Please do not include your entire social security number on any forms — the last four numbers will suffice. Send completed forms and direct questions to BMCC Benefits Manager Diana Lopez, dlopez@bmcc.cuny.edu, on or before October 30.

Sub Incentive Rate Just Added for NYC Department of Education Substitute Teachers
Earn $193.47 for a 6-hour, 50-minute day as a substitute teacher through the NYC Department of Education. In addition to that rate, substitute teachers who work in person from September 29 to October 30 are eligible to receive $100 per day for up to five days for a total of up to $500, and an additional $500 for a total of 15 or more in-person days during this period for a total of $1,000. To start the application process, take this online survey
