BMCC To Confer Degrees to More Than 4,000 Students During In-Person Commencement on June 9 at Barclays Center
On Thursday, June 9, BMCC will host its first in-person commencement since the COVID-19 global pandemic necessitated a quarantine and over two years of remote learning. The college’s 57th Commencement ceremony is scheduled at the Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn at the crossroads of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues. Doors will open to guest at 8 a.m. 

EAA BMCC Announces 2021-2022 Employee Appreciation Awards Nominees
BMCC is proud to announce the 2021-2022 NOMINEES for the Employee Appreciation Awards (EAA). The EAAs are presented to non-teaching, full- and part-time administrative and/or support and service staff members who were nominated in appreciation of their overall quality of work and dedication to the College. Eligible staff levels include: Civil Service series (including Provisional); College Assistants; Research Foundation employees; Gittleson (COA, CSA, CAA); and HEO Title Series. Award categories are: Leadership, Team, Inspiration, Innovation/Technology, and Rookie of the Year! Winners will be announced on Friday June 10.
Munroe President Munroe Addresses Tragedy in Texas Elementary School
In a message to the BMCC community, President Anthony E. Munroe writes, "Our country is in mourning once again after the devastation that occurred on May 24 when a gunman fatally shot at least 19 children and two adults at a Texas elementary school. Our thoughts and prayers go to the victims and families of this horrific tragedy that continues to remind us of how precious life is." Political Science Chancellor Message: Mask Recommended In Crowded Indoor Public Settings
In an email to the CUNY community, Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez states that, "New York City’s Covid-19 level is currently high according to the NYC Department of Health’s Alert Level system and the CDC’s Community Level tracking. Health officials recommend we wear a mask in indoor public settings and people over 65 and those at high risk of severe illness should also wear a mask in crowded outdoor spaces." The Chancellor also says, "as many of you prepare to attend commencements with your loved ones and friends, we urge you to wear a mask in public indoor spaces — for your safety and that of those around you ... You can find additional CUNY guidance here."
Lyn Thomas After Decades Cleaning Homes and Working as a Nanny, 52 Year-Old Earns a College Degree
A 52-year-old BMCC Public Health major who worked for decades cleaning houses and as a nanny has some sage advice for adults who may think they’re not qualified or too old to go to college. “You are never too old to get your high school equivalency degree (GED) and enroll in college,” said Lyn Thomas, who will graduate from BMCC in Spring 2022.

Devices

All BMCC Devices Are Due Back Friday, May 27
Please let students know that all devices, iPads, laptops, Chromebooks, hotspots and other borrowed devices are due back by May 27. In order to facilitate returns, Library staff will be in the lobby outside the Public Safety office at 199 Chambers to accept returns on the following dates and times:

  • Friday, May 27, from 12 to 4 p.m.
  • Monday, June 6, from 12 to 4 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Safety Office of Public Safety Offers Resources and Services
The Office of Public Safety ensures a safe, secure and comfortable learning environment at BMCC through resources including free C.P.R., A.E.D. and First Aid, and Campus-Community Emergency Response Training for faculty, staff and students. Public Safety also trains staff as campus fire wardens. Cultural Corps Deadline to Apply to CUNY Cultural Corps Is June 3
Let your students know that the deadline is June 3 to apply for a paid internship at one of NYC’s cultural institutions through the CUNY Cultural Corps for the 2022-23 academic year. The program offers virtual and hybrid opportunities as well as in-person opportunities contingent on COVID regulations and guidelines. Petrie and STEM Summer Tuition Waivers Help Students Complete Their Degrees
BMCC will offer two tuition waivers in Summer 2022: the Petrie Completion Waiver and the STEM Waiver. To be eligible, students must be degree-seeking at BMCC. Each waiver covers $210 per credit. Please note that only tuition will be waived and recipients will be responsible for all fees and materials, such as textbooks. To qualify, students must have registered no later than May 1 for classes starting May 31, and no later than June 15 for classes starting July 20. 

  • Students eligible for the Petrie Completion waiver must have three or fewer courses left to complete their associate degree and use the waiver to complete those courses. They can apply one tuition waiver in the summer session beginning May 31 and one in the session starting July 20.
  • Students eligible for the STEM waiver must be an NYC resident and U.S. citizen or permanent resident at the time the waiver is applied. They must enroll in a credit-bearing math, science or computer science course that counts toward their degree and can apply the one waiver each for classes in the summer sessions starting May 31 and July 20. Other courses covered by the STEM waiver are: ANI 401, 402 and 260; any CIS, EMC 100 and 303; HIT 210, LIN 101, MEA 201 and 371; MMA 100, MMP 100, NUR 415, PHI 110, PSY 100 and RTT 210. MBJ MBJ Food Service Summer Hours 
From May 31 through August 24, MBJ Food Service (Cafeteria) at BMCC's 199 Chambers Street campus, will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The cafeteria will also be closed Friday May 27. For more information email mbjfoodservice@bmcc.cuny.edu. 
Produce BMCC Students Can Receive Free Bag of Produce 
Currently registered BMCC students can receive a free bag of fresh produce, thanks to a partnership between the New York City Council, CUNY and Grow NYC. The produce distribution will take place on Tuesdays through June 21 between 12 and 3 p.m. Students must sign up in advance by clicking the registration link and completing a brief survey.
Cafeteria BMCC Panther Pantry Assists Students Facing Food Insecurity 
BMCC students facing a food emergency are encouraged to visit the Panther Pantry and take home pre-packed bags of nutritious, non-perishable food. The pantry distributes bags of food, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hot meals are distributed Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m. at 199 Chambers Street, Room S-230. COVID-19 Treatments Available For NYC Residents Age 12 and Over
Treatment is available to NYC residents age 12 and older who test positive for COVID-19. Only a healthcare provider can prescribe treatment, which could be a daily pill taken for five days or a one-time IV or injection. Treatment is free and can be delivered to your home within 24 hours. These treatments can lessen symptoms and help keep you out of the hospital. Faculty and Staff Deadline to Upload Vaccine Verification Extended to May 27
CUNY and the Professional Staff Congress/CUNY (PSC) have agreed to revise the date by which all full- and part-time faculty and non-teaching instructional staff — including NTAs, CLTs and those in the HEO-title series — are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and to upload proof of vaccination into CUNYfirst. The new deadline is May 27 and applies to ECPs, as well. Summer and Fall 2022 Advisement and Registration is Open
Faculty and staff, please encourage students to schedule a Zoom meeting with their advisor to discuss their academic progress and registration. Things to know: All students must meet with their advisor before registering. Students can register on CUNYfirst or meet with a Panther Station Specialists on Zoom. When choosing classes on CUNYfirst, students should pay close attention to the class meeting mode (in-person, online or hybrid), as well as the class session (15, 8 or 7 weeks). Students attending in-person or hybrid classes must upload proof of vaccination. Support Available to BMCC Community Members Impacted By Tragic Events in Texas
Our hearts are heavy with the news of yesterday’s deadly shooting in Uvalde, Texas, claiming the lives of the gunman’s grandmother and at least 19 children and a teacher at Robb Elementary School.  We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and citizens of Uvalde. Tragedies that occur in our nation’s schools inevitably hit close to home and cause us to feel a range of emotions and concerns. Some people may benefit from speaking with a professional counselor to help them process their reactions. Please be reminded that you and your family members have free, confidential access to support, guidance, and referrals for a variety of needs and concerns through CCA@YourService. Please reach out confidentially to 800-833-8707. Mandatory Trainings for Full-Time Staff and Faculty 
ESPARC (Employee Sexual and Interpersonal Violence Prevention and Response Course) and WPV (Workplace Violence Prevention) trainings are mandatory for all BMCC full-time faculty and staff. The deadline to complete the trainings is July 28. BOTH Trainings can be completed via Blackboard and are located under My Organizations. For your convenience, HR will also be hosting two final Zoom training sessions:

• ESPARC: May 31 at 10:30 a.m.
• WPV: June 2 at 10:30 a.m.

Scholarship Honors Legacy of BMCC Professor Gail Mansouri
BMCC faculty, staff and friends gathered in the lobby of the Miles and Shirley Fiterman Hall on May 24 to celebrate the memory of Dr. Gail Mansouri, long-time Political Science Professor, with a plaque on the Donor Wall recognizing a scholarship in her name and made possible by a generous donation from BMCC supporters Ed and Phyllis Lakner. “This is the greatest way of honoring her,” said Ms. Lakner, who is the sister of Dr. Mansouri. “Academics was her life. She loved her students, her colleagues — every part of the educational system.” Each semester, one male and one female BMCC student will be chosen by the Social Sciences, Human Services and Criminal Justice department chairperson for the Dr. Gail Mansouri Scholarship. “Dr. Mansouri did much to enrich the lives of her students and colleagues during her tenure at BMCC, and we are grateful that the Lakners have chosen to honor her legacy with this scholarship that will support students continuing their studies in the Social Sciences disciplines,” said Karen Wilson-Stevenson, BMCC’s Interim Vice President, Office for Institutional Advancement.  To contribute to the Dr. Gail Mansouri scholarship fund, click here.

These accomplished leaders are gamechangers, trailblazers and pioneers and will be profiled in a special edition of City & State magazine debuting June 27 and celebrated at an awards event on June 28 at Midtown Loft, 267 Fifth Avenue, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
