BMCC Hosts HETS Board Meeting
BMCC, a proud Hispanic-Serving Institution, is hosting the annual board meeting of the Hispanic Educational Technology Services (HETS) membership on June 23-24. HETS, established in 1993, is the first bilingual consortium constituted by more than 40 higher education institutions in Puerto Rico, United Sates and Latin America. BMCC President Dr. Anthony E. Munroe welcomed leadership from other institutions who gathered to discuss advancement of innovation, leadership and opportunities in Hispanic Higher Education, and the use of technology to facilitate educational opportunities for Latinx college students.

BioDesign

BMCC First Community College to Compete in International BioDesign Conference
Mentored by Sociology Professor Elizabeth Wissinger, three BMCC students—Josephine Huang (Computer Science), Chaya Droznik (Computer Science) and Dulce Romero (Criminal Justice)—will present their GreenLiving BioCondo Project, a speculative, futuristic community designed to promote practical uses for biodesign, on Day 3 (June 23) of the Biodesign Challenge (BDC) Summit 2022. The BMCC team will present alongside 54 finalist teams from 17 countries, and before an esteemed international panel of 60+ judges from academia, the arts and industry. Only one team will be awarded the Glass Microbe trophy. "This is the first time a community college has been represented in the Biodesign Challenge Summit, an international competition and education program for high schools and universities that introduces students to the intersections of biotechnology, art and design," said Professor Wissinger. "The BMCC students worked with tireless dedication, despite busy work schedules and heavy course loads, to envision a way to promote biodesign and make it more accessible for everyone."  Register for the BDC Summit, to learn more. Shown L-R: Huang, Droznik and Romero holding experimental mycelium grow kits intended to create mushroom-derived objects such as lampshades for their proposed GreenLiving BioCondo.

BMCC Celebrates Nursing Graduates With Pinning Ceremony
BMCC’s graduates from the Nursing Program participated in the traditional pinning ceremony on June 22 in Theater 1. Dr. Anthony E. Munroe, BMCC President; Dr. Erwin Wong, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Marva Craig, Vice President for Student Affairs; and Dr. Michael Hutmaker, Dean of Student Affairs; presented remarks during the ceremony, which was led by Judy Eng, RN, MSN, Professor and Chair of Nursing. Nursing graduate Janessa Lyons (’22) performed the national anthem. Other ceremonial traditions included the lighting of the nursing lamp, the nurse’s pledge, and the keynote address presented by Sonia Nelson, RN, MSN/M, Former Director of Nursing at Mount Sinai Health Systems. Closing of the ceremony included the reflections from the graduates presented by Ki Bang (’22-evening session); Janika Reid, (’22-morning session); Fred Ditman (’22-afternoon session); and Ethan Schiavi (’22-evening session).

Pride Month 2022 Celebrates Inclusion
June is Pride Month and BMCC students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to visit the exhibition Pride in Comics and Graphic Novels at the BMCC Library and leave a message of inspiration on the BMCC Pride Padlet. Join BMCC at Harlem Pride 2022 Celebration Day on Saturday, June 25, and march with CUNY at NYC Pride on Sunday, June 26. Safety Office of Public Safety Offers Resources and Services
The Office of Public Safety ensures a safe, secure and comfortable learning environment at BMCC through resources including free C.P.R., A.E.D./First Aid, and Campus-Community Emergency Response trainings for faculty, staff and students. Public Safety also trains staff as campus fire wardens. Cafeteria BMCC Panther Pantry Assists Students Facing Food Insecurity 
BMCC students facing a food emergency are encouraged to visit the Panther Pantry and take home pre-packed bags of nutritious, non-perishable food, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hot meals are distributed Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m. The Panther Pantry is in the Advocacy and Resource Center (ARC),199 Chambers Street, Room S-230. Admissions will host In-Person Open House on Saturday, June 25
After months of virtual events, BMCC is giving admitted students a taste of on-campus life with its first in-person Open House since the start of the pandemic. This welcome event will be held on Saturday, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 199 Chambers Street. Students and families will explore the main campus, learn about financial resources and support programs, meet BMCC’s dynamic faculty and participate in mini interactive academic sessions. For safety reasons, capacity is limited to 500 and all attendees must provide proof of COVID vaccination. Open Enrollment at The CUNY Center in Harlem
Starting June 21, BMCC Admissions is now serving students at the CUNY Center in Harlem, 55 West 125th Street, on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer by appointment only. Students will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with an Admissions Specialist to get assistance with completing their next steps to enroll for the Fall semester. For more information, contact Admissions at admissions@bmcc.cuny.edu.

Summer and Fall 2022 Advisement and Registration is Open
Faculty and staff, please encourage students to schedule a Zoom meeting with their advisor to discuss their academic progress and registration. Things to know: All students must meet with their advisor before registering. Students can register on CUNYfirst or meet with a Panther Station Specialists on Zoom. When choosing classes on CUNYfirst, students should pay close attention to the class meeting mode (in-person, online or hybrid), as well as the class session (15, 8 or 7 weeks). Students attending in-person or hybrid classes must upload proof of vaccination. Admissions is Back in the Swing With In-Person Events   
The BMCC Admissions and Recruitment team is reintegrating on-campus Tours and Information Sessions. Campus Tours will be offered Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. and the Information Sessions at 3 p.m. Be on the lookout for new and friendly faces around campus. Petrie and STEM Summer Tuition Waivers Help Students Complete Their Degrees
BMCC will offer two Summer 2022 tuition waivers: the Petrie Completion Waiver and the STEM Waiver. To be eligible, students must be degree-seeking at BMCC. Each waiver covers $210 per credit. Please note that only tuition will be waived and recipients are responsible for all fees and materials, such as textbooks. To qualify, students must have registered no later than no later than June 15 for classes starting July 20.  

  • Students eligible for the Petrie Completion waiver must have three or fewer courses left to complete their associate degree and use the waiver to complete those courses. They can apply one tuition waiver in the summer session that starts on July 20. 
  • Students eligible for the STEM waiver must be an NYC resident and U.S. citizen or permanent resident when the waiver is applied. The waiver relates to a credit-bearing math, science or computer science course that counts toward their degree. Students can apply the waiver for one class in the summer session starting July 20. Other courses covered by the STEM waiver are: ANI 401, 402 and 260; any CIS, EMC 100 and 303; HIT 210, LIN 101, MEA 201 and 371; MMA 100, MMP 100, NUR 415, PHI 110, PSY 100 and RTT 210.

BMCC Resumes Summer Friday Schedule Next Week 
The weeks of June 27, July 11, July 18, July 25, August 1 and August 8 will all end with a Summer Friday. The week of July 4 will be a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday week, with that Monday, July 4, off as a CUNY Holiday.

Mandatory Trainings for Full-Time Staff and Faculty 
The ESPARC (Employee Sexual and Interpersonal Violence Prevention and Response Course) and WPV (Workplace Violence Prevention) trainings are mandatory for all BMCC full-time faculty and staff. The deadline to complete the 2021-2022 mandatory ESPARC and WPV trainings is July 28. BOTH Trainings can be completed via Blackboard and are located under My Organizations.

WorkWell Presents Ergonomics 101 Workshop June 24 
At 10 a.m. on Friday, June 24, WorkWell will present a free Zoom workshop on Ergonomics 101. Participants will explore ways to improve posture, reduce body strain and manage their day to optimize well-being at work. Click here for the Zoom link.
