Dr. Brianne K. Waychoff, Associate Professor of Speech, Communications, and Theatre Arts, loving partner of Dr. Ben Powell, also a Professor of Speech, Communications, and Theatre Arts, has passed away. Dr. Waychoff died of 9/11 related kidney cancer after being diagnosed in 2021. She was 43. Dr. Waychoff was a feminist, performance artist, teacher and a force of nature. She was a prolific scholar recognized both nationally and internationally in Performance as well as Communications Studies and Communication Studies. She primarily focused on Gender and Communication courses within the Speech, Communications, and Theatre Dept at BMCC. In 2017 Dr. Waychoff and Sociology Professor Amy Sodaro designed and launched the Gender and Women's Studies (GWS) major at BMCC. Dr. Waychoff was incredibly proud of the program and a fierce advocate for each and every student she encountered in her work as Co-Chair of GWS. For Dr. Waychoff, the GWS program at BMCC was the culmination of years of advocacy, struggle, and labor by an incredible group of women colleagues that came before her such as Professors Olivia Cousins, Cheryl Fish, Tricia Lin, Deborah Parker, and many others. Dr. Waychoff was an incredible, inspiring teacher and mentor for so many students at BMCC. As one 2022 BMCC Kaplan Scholar put it during an interview, she was grateful to Dr. Waychoff for teaching her to always “stand firm and fight for what I believe in.” Donations can be made at: The Brigid Alliance or The Center:The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center
