President Anthony E. Munroe Encourages College Community to Take Action and Support BMCC Dreamers
In a message to the college community, BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe encouraged students, faculty and staff to reach out to members of Congress and urge them to pass legislation that would create a permanent pathway to citizenship for beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and other undocumented students. Last week, President Munroe traveled to Washington D.C., where he and other college presidents, community leaders and immigration advocates as well as students met with elected representatives and urged them to pass bipartisan legislation before Congress goes home for the holidays. Consul General of Dominican Republic Visits BMCC
The Honorable Consul General of the Dominican Republic in New York City, Eligio Jáquez, along with a Consular Delegation, met with BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe and members of his cabinet on December 6 at 199 Chambers Street. As part of the visit, the Consular General and his team toured the college and met with students and faculty from the college’s respiratory health, paramedics and STEM research programs. “We were honored to have Consular General Jáquez join us on campus and are grateful for the opportunity to discuss ways in which we could partner with the Consulate to serve the educational and workforce needs of the Dominican community, not only here in New York City, but also in the Dominican Republic,” said President Munroe.

Making a Safe Space
President Anthony Munroe reiterates the value placed on creating a safe space for everyone in the BMCC community, in the wake of the Club Q mass shooting and other recent hate crimes and violence. "In a world where violence, both spoken and enacted, looms on a daily basis, BMCC’s commitment to being a safe space is more of a bedrock priority than ever," the President says. Students’ Documentaries, Animation and More Garner Awards in BMCC Film Festival
The Fall 2022 BMCC Film Festival, organized by the college’s Cinema Art Club, was held Friday, December 2 in BMCC’s Theatre 1 and brought to light some of the college’s most talented filmmakers. “This was the first in-person festival since December 2019,” said documentary filmmaker and Video Arts and Technology Professor Anastassios (Tassos) Rigopoulos. “Out of the 49 films submitted, 36 were selected for screening. All films were produced by BMCC students, most of them majoring in either Video Arts and Technology, Animation, or Multimedia Programming and Design. The judges were impressed with the aesthetic and technical quality, cultural diversity and range of the films. They had a hard time deciding on the winner in each category, which is why they bestowed several honorable mentions in addition to the main awards.”
Blackstone Launchpad Holiday Pop Up Features BMCC Students' Handmade Products
Students, faculty and staff were able to get some of their holiday shopping done at the BMCC Blackstone LaunchPad Holiday Pop Up market at 199 Chambers Street on December 7. BMCC Celebrates Women’s Volleyball and Men’s Soccer Champions
BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe participated in an event celebrating the Fall 2022 CUNYAC community college champions, the BMCC men’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams, December 6 at 199 Chambers Street. The celebration was followed by a double header basketball men’s basketball game. For more details, visit BMCC Athletics.
BMCC Hosts Field Day in Gym
BMCC hosted its semi-annual field day December 7 in the gymnasium at 199 Chambers Street. Students could participate in a relay race, trivia challenges and basketball. The event was part of DeStressFest 2022 which is designed to help students relax and recharge for finals week. New Student Programs, Athletics, the Health Education Department, the Office of Accessibility and Connections/Connexiones all collaborated to produce the event.
Learning Resource Center Hosts Tutoring Expo
BMCC’s Learning Resource Center (LRC) hosted a tutoring expo in Richard Harris Terrace at 199 Chambers Street on December 7. Free on-demand tutorial services were available as well as information about other LRC support services. The LRC provides academic support services to meet students’ learning needs and strengthen academic skills by affording them the opportunity to complete their coursework successfully. De-Stressfest Continues Through December 9
Students who might be feeling stressed about upcoming exams and other end-of-the-semester deadlines are invited to join activities planned for the Fall 2022 De-Stressfest happening until December 9. Students are also encouraged to de-stress through the BMCC Fitness Center, swimming pool and other activities happening in the Athletics Department throughout the week.

Public Safety Seeking Volunteer Fire Wardens
BMCC’s Office of Public Safety is seeking faculty and staff to serve as volunteer fire wardens on campus. BMCC fire wardens are provided free training and are called upon during fire evacuations and other emergencies, as well as drills, to ensure the safety of the college community. Fire wardens may help or help locate persons with disabilities who may need further assistance to evacuate. Give the Gift of Sight: Donate Eyewear to Those in Need
In partnership with the Lions Clubs International, the BMCC Office of Evening/Weekend and Off-Site Programs is collecting used eyewear that can be repurposed to help children and adults in need of glasses around the world. Recipients of the eyewear will be provided with new lenses. Please make sure the frames are intact. The drop box is located in the Academic Affairs office, 199 Chambers Street, Room S-715. CUNY Startups Offers Free Program to Help Students Jump-Start Their New Ventures
Let your students know that if they have a startup blueprint, prototype or business plan, CUNY Startups offers a free accelerator program to bring their ideas to fruition. The New Venture Accelerator (NVA 2) is a FREE 10-week program committed to helping students jump-start their startups through engaging workshops and mentoring. Encourage students to apply by December 31 to join a Spring 2023 collaborative experience, where students with distinct entrepreneurial goals launch their businesses. |

As trusted influencers, please encourage students to meet with their advisor to track their academic progress and set a plan for success. Things to know: All students must meet with their advisor before registering. Students can register on CUNYfirst or meet with a Panther Station Specialists on Zoom. When choosing classes on CUNYfirst, students should pay close attention to the class meeting mode (in-person, online or hybrid), as well as the class session (15, 8 or 7 weeks). Students attending in-person or hybrid classes must upload proof of vaccination. All CUNY Employees Are Mandated to Take These Two Trainings on Blackboard or Zoom
Both CUNY-mandated, 2022-2023 Work Place Violence (WPV) and Employee Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Course (ESPARC) trainings are available on Blackboard. Log into your Blackboard account and select the BMCC ESPARC or WVP training under “My organization." Starting November 22, both trainings will also be available on Zoom and will take two hours to complete as they are presented consecutively. Diversity-Related Programs Available to BMCC Employees
The CUNY University Training Office is offering diversity-related programs this Fall 2022 semester. Courses targeted to staff at all levels, including directors, managers and supervisors, cover topics including how to present persuasively in person or virtually, how to build an inclusive culture, how to move from microaggressions to microaffirmations and more. Before registering for any professional development course, BMCC employees must receive written approval from their supervisor, then complete the Fall Course Registration Form. Next, the BMCC employee and their supervisor will receive a confirmation email from University.Training@cuny.edu within seven business days. Seats are limited, so please register as soon as possible. |

Kennedy's Outstanding Panther Debut Not Enough For Women's Basketball In a Close Game With Bronx Community College
The BMCC women's basketball team continues to fight from the opening tip until the final buzzer this season. In a competitive conference duel that featured nine different lead changes and seven tie games, the Panthers erased a 26-24 halftime deficit to go into the final quarter tied at 36, but the Broncos were able to pull away in the fourth and scored a 54-44 victory on Tuesday night at BMCC Gymnasium.
Jeremiah Cardi Receives CUNYAC CC Men's Player of the Week Accolades, Demaris Andrews Grabs Second Rookie of the Week Honor
After leading the BMCC men's basketball team to back-to-back victories, sophomore guard Jeremiah Cardi earned the CUNYAC CC Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors, and freshman Demaris Andrews was recognized as the Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. Cardi picks up Player of the Week accolades for the second time in his career after getting recognized in week one of the 2021-22 season.
