BMCC Theatre Program Alumna Named Stage Director Fellow at Metropolitan Opera
After Michelle Cuizon turned 18, she emigrated to New York City to join her family who had settled in Woodside, Queens. A few months later, Cuizon found her way to BMCC where she completed the College’s Theatre program. After graduating from BMCC in 2018, Cuizon attended the Dobbins Conservatory at Southeast Missouri State where she earned a Bachelors in Fine Arts. Earlier this year, Cuizon was named a 2022-23 stage director fellow at the Metropolitan Opera (the Met), the largest classical music organization in North America.

Consul General of Jamaica Visits BMCC
The Honorable Consul General of Jamaica to New York City, Alsion Roach Wilson, met with BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe and members of his cabinet on December 14 at 199 Chambers Street. The President and Consul General discussed a number of potential learning and leadership opportunities for students as well as other academic and research collaborations.

Teacher Education Department Launches Alpha Kappa Sigma Chapter
On December 14, the BMCC Teacher Education Department (TED) launched the college’s Alpha Kappa Sigma chapter of the national Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society. Kappa Delta Pi recognizes the academic achievement and professional commitment of educators in early childhood, childhood and secondary settings. Members benefit from professional development, career search assistance, scholarships and more. The ceremony, held at the Fiterman Hall 13th-floor conference center, honored 16 Teacher Education majors joining the chapter: Jenisis Ayala, Lisbet Cabrera, Kerri Ann Chin, Stephanie Cintron, Quesia Cruz, Sharlyng Encarnacion, Aurilene Felipe, Dania Hernandez, Shomaree Hope-Hinds, Jessica Jimenez, Simone Marbury, Claritz Marte, Sabnam Mosleha, Syndney Nechis, Walesca Ramos Luciano and Nateah Pia Staine. Student chapter officers are Lisbet Cabrera, President; Jessica Jimenez, Vice President; Aurilene Felipe, Treasurer; Jenisis Ayala, Secretary and Quesia Cruz, Membership. The Kappa Delta Pi committee includes TED Professors Mindi Reich-Shapiro, Chair; Virginia Lee, Chapter Counselor, Janice Szarko and Newton S. Silva. The charter was presented to President Anthony Munroe and TED Chair Yolanda Medina. Marisol Rosales, former Deputy Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education, was the event’s guest speaker.

Morehouse

Students Learn About Support Services for Transfer to Morehouse College
On December 15 at 199 Chambers Street, the office of Enrollment Management Services and the Urban Male Leadership Academy (UMLA) hosted a meeting with students who took part in an October campus visit to Morehouse College in Atlanta. In addition to hearing feedback about the visit to Morehouse, Enrollment Management and UMLA leaders shared information about the support services available to students as they navigate the transfer process from BMCC to Morehouse. President Anthony E. Munroe, members of his cabinet and Consul General of Jamaica to New York City Alsion Roach Wilson visited with the students and shared encouraging words. This is the first of several meetings Enrollment Management and UMLA plan to have with students to help them successfully transfer to Morehouse. The BMCC/Morehouse College Partnership assists male BMCC students who plan to transfer to Morehouse College, one of the country’s top Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). National Society of Leadership and Success

More Than 100 BMCC Students Inducted Into National Society of Leadership and Success
The Division of Student Affairs hosted an in-person induction ceremony for the 101 newly inducted members of the National Society of Leadership & Success (NSLS) on December 12 at 199 Chambers Street. This was the first in-person NSLS ceremony at BMCC since Fall 2019. As many as 3,000 BMCC students have joined NSLS since the chapter’s founding in 2018. Members must demonstrate scholarship and work toward their foundations and leadership program, which “builds leaders who build a better world.” For more information, visit NSLS or contact the Division of Student Affairs

Faculty Workspaces Available Across BMCC Campus
All BMCC faculty—both full-time and adjunct—have access to office space through their academic department. Faculty members who have not received information about, or access to these spaces should contact their department chair. Cafeteria MBJ Cafeteria Holiday Hours
The MBJ cafeteria at 199 Chambers Street will be closed from December 22, 2022 to January 2, 2023. From January 3 until January 25, the cafeteria will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Regular operating hours are scheduled to return after January 25. 
Stop the Bleed BMCC Public Safety Department Stop the Bleed Training
The number one cause of preventable death after an injury is bleeding. The BMCC Public Safety Department is offering a special training to all who are interested in learning three quick steps to stop the bleed. Participants will gain the ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding and act quickly and effectively to control bleeding. The training will be conducted January 11 and January 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.

CUNY Introduces Centralized Program for Reports of Discrimination or Retaliation
CUNY has launched a University-Wide Discrimination and Retaliation Reporting Portal to report complaints of unlawful discrimination, harassment or retaliation. BMCC students, faculty and staff who have a complaint of unlawful discrimination, harassment or retaliation, as prohibited by and defined in CUNY’s Policy on Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination, should use the online Portal link to file the complaint. The complaint will then be routed to BMCC’s Office of Compliance and Diversity. A link to the Portal can also be found on the Office of Compliance and Diversity website. BMCC managers who become aware of conduct or allegations of unlawful discrimination, harassment or retaliation, should also use the Portal to report the matter to the Office of Compliance and Diversity. Contact the Office of Compliance and Diversity with any questions.

Public Safety Public Safety Seeking Volunteer Fire Wardens
BMCC’s Office of Public Safety is seeking faculty and staff to serve as volunteer fire wardens on campus. BMCC fire wardens are provided free training and are called upon during fire evacuations and other emergencies, as well as drills, to ensure the safety of the college community. Fire wardens may help or help locate persons with disabilities who may need further assistance to evacuate. Give the Gift of Sight: Donate Eyewear to Those in Need
In partnership with the Lions Clubs International, the BMCC Office of Evening/Weekend and Off-Site Programs is collecting used eyewear that can be repurposed to help children and adults in need of glasses around the world. Recipients of the eyewear will be provided with new lenses. Please make sure the frames are intact. The drop box is located in the Academic Affairs office, 199 Chambers Street, Room S-715. Sustainability CUNY Startups Offers Free Program to Help Students Jump-Start Their New Ventures 
Let your students know that if they have a startup blueprint, prototype or business plan, CUNY Startups offers a free accelerator program to bring their ideas to fruition. The New Venture Accelerator (NVA 2) is a FREE 10-week program committed to helping students jump-start their startups through engaging workshops and mentoring. Encourage students to apply by December 31 to join a Spring 2023 collaborative experience, where students with distinct entrepreneurial goals launch their businesses.

Students value the advice and support of BMCC faculty and staff. As trusted influencers, please encourage students to meet with their advisor to track their academic progress and set a plan for success. Things to know: All students must meet with their advisor before registering. Students can register on CUNYfirst or meet with a Panther Station Specialists on Zoom. When choosing classes on CUNYfirst, students should pay close attention to the class meeting mode (in-person, online or hybrid), as well as the class session (15, 8 or 7 weeks). Students attending in-person or hybrid classes must upload proof of vaccination. All CUNY Employees Are Mandated to Take These Two Trainings on Blackboard
Both CUNY-mandated, 2022-2023 Work Place Violence (WPV) and Employee Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Course (ESPARC) trainings are available on Blackboard. Log into your Blackboard account and select the BMCC ESPARC or WVP training under “My organization."

Diversity-Related Programs Available to BMCC Employees
The CUNY University Training Office is offering diversity-related programs this Fall 2022 semester. Courses targeted to staff at all levels, including directors, managers and supervisors, cover topics including how to present persuasively in person or virtually, how to build an inclusive culture, how to move from microaggressions to microaffirmations and more. Before registering for any professional development course, BMCC employees must receive written approval from their supervisor, then complete the Fall Course Registration Form. Next, the BMCC employee and their supervisor will receive a confirmation email from University.Training@cuny.edu within seven business days. Seats are limited, so please register as soon as possible.

Electronic Paystubs Available
FISA-OPA, CUNY’s HR and Payroll processing agency for Community Colleges, now offers employees on New York City payroll the option to no longer receive paper paystubs, W-2s and 1095-Cs. Instructions on accessing NYCAPS Employee Self-Service and viewing/updating print-delivery statuses can be found on the UHR NYCAPS ESS webpage.

Laffitte Receives CUNYAC CC Rookie of the Week Accolades For The Second Time; Emily Kennedy Picks Up First Rookie of the Week Honor
After leading the BMCC men's basketball team to a perfect 2-0 record and extending their winning streak to a season-high four games, freshman forward Daniel Laffitte was named CUNYAC CC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. And, women’s basketball freshman forward Emily Kennedy picked up her first Rookie of the Week honor after a stellar debut last Tuesday in conference action against Bronx Community College, as announced by the conference on Monday.
