Human Resources

Roane Long-Time BMCC Professor William Roane Passes Away
Department of Social Sciences, Human Services & Criminal Justice, (Psychology) Professor William (Bill) Roane, 76, passed away January 7 according to an announcement shared by Human Resources. Roane spent the majority of his professional career—30 years—at BMCC. He retired in 2020. For many years, Roane served as chair of the Exploring Transfer program at Vassar College which provides transfer opportunities for BMCC students to Vassar through a summer placement program. In 2016, a BMCC alumna and Exploring Transfer scholar who later graduated from Sarah Lawrence College and was then attending Teachers College at Columbia University, recalled Roane’s impact on her academic journey. “Without the supportive faculty and staff at BMCC and the guidance of Professor Roane, I don’t think I would be where I am today,” she said.  His colleagues recalled his warm and generous personality. “Bill was funny, irreverent, always helpful and extremely kind,” said Sangeeta Bishop, Chair of the Department of Social Sciences, Human Services and Criminal Justice. Bishop said Roane loved his students and teaching. Even towards the end, Bishop says, he talked about coming back to teach a class or two at BMCC. “On a personal level, he was my strongest support at BMCC. His passing has left a hole in my heart no one will ever be able to fill,” said Bishop. Professor Janice Walters called Roane a “dear friend.” “Bill made me feel welcomed to the department,” said Walters, who had shared an office with Roane since 2000. “We became best friends and shared many experiences, both inside and outside the college. He was amazing and he will be forever in my heart.” She said Roane was active in community service, and dedicated to improving shared living arrangements for senior citizens in care facilities. William Roane’s service is scheduled for January 14 at 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church in Laurence Harbor N.J. Read more about Professor Roane in his obituary. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation in Bill's memory to The William M. Roane Scholarship for the BMCC Exploring Transfer Summer Program at Vassar College. Make checks payable to the BMCC Foundation Inc. or donate online by credit card here. (Under designation, choose the William M. Roane Scholarship)
