BMCC Student Gesy Duran Wins Blackstone LaunchPad Competition
BMCC student Gesy Duran has won the Consumer Products and Services category in the Network round at the 2022 Blackstone LaunchPad Ideas Competition. Duran, one of five student winners from across the United States, will receive a $10,000 grant from the Blackstone Charitable Foundation. Duran, a Human Services major, won for her idea Wheel-eating, a portable tray that helps adapt any table to accommodate a multitude of wheelchair types—increasing the quality of life for wheelchair users during mealtime.
BMCC Hosts Education Leaders from Italy
BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe and members of his cabinet welcomed a delegation of education leaders from Italy during a breakfast event on January 25 in Richard Harris Terrace at 199 Chambers Street. The breakfast was followed by a campus tour that included the Research lab, the Learning Resource Center and the Panther Pantry. CUNY Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Denise B. Maybank also attended the event. Among the guests were Alessandro Ciro Sciretti, President of Edisu Piemonte and President of the World University Games 2025, Professor Laura Scomparin, Vice Chancellor for Research in the Economic, Legal and Social Sciences at the University of Turin as well as Alberto Rainoldi, Vice Chancellor for Welfare, Sustainability and Sport at the University of Turin.
“Working on It,” a Spectacular Exhibition of Faculty Art, Opens February 22
“Working On It,” an exhibition of recent work by faculty artists from the Music and Art and Media Arts and Technology departments at BMCC will open with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22 in the college’s Shirley Fiterman Art Center (SFAC). The exhibition will showcase faculty artists working in a wide range of media: traditional painting and sculpture, installation art, experimental photography, video and works employing new media. The SFAC is open to the public Wednesday through Friday from 12 to 5 p.m. Visitors can also view the exhibition by appointment. BMCC Signs Up More Students Through CUNY Reconnect Than Any Other Campus
CUNY Reconnect welcomes back students who may have earned some college credit but left before earning a degree. The program also works with students who graduated high school but were unable to enroll in college due to personal experiences stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Launched at the start of the Fall 2022 semester, the program was proposed by New York City Council Speaker Adrienne E. Adams. Former BMCC students who are interested in re-enrolling in college can learn more through CUNY Reconnect here.
Students Can Now Complete Writing & Literature Program Online
BMCC students looking to complete a Writing and Literature degree will now have the option to complete the program online, in-person or a combination of both. Online degree students have the option of completing all or just some courses online. BMCC currently offers nine degree and certificate programs that offer the online option.  Alumna Daniella Donald Joins BMCC as Benefits Manager
BMCC and the Department of Human Resources welcomes Benefits Manager Daniella Donald, who will oversee employee benefits programs including health insurance, retirement plans and more. Having earned degrees and held several positions within CUNY, Donald comes to BMCC from her role as benefits/time and leave specialist at the CUNY School of Professional Studies. Before that time, she was a benefits coordinator at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, and a college assistant in the CUNY University Benefits Office. Donald received an MPA in Fall 2018 from Baruch College, CUNY, and a Bachelor of Business Administration at SUNY Genesco. She earned an Associate in Liberal Arts degree at BMCC in Spring 2004. CUNY Career Launch Paid Internship Program Deadline February 5
CUNY Career Launch is recruiting undergrads who haven’t had paid internship experience but are ready to apply the skills they’ve learned in the classroom to the workplace. Students will work for 7 weeks between early July until mid-August for 19 hours a week. They can take a summer class, keep a part-time job, or take care of their family while they intern with CUNY Career Launch. Free Tax Preparation Available for BMCC Students
BMCC students are invited to receive virtual or in-person assistance in filing their tax returns through the Advocacy and Resource Center (ARC) in Room S230 at 199 Chambers Street. Starting February 6 and ending April 10, virtual assistance, via Zoom webinars, each Monday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration is required. Beginning on January 23 through April 17, each Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 9:30 to 4 p.m., in person service will be available at the ARC. Stop the Bleed Training Session February 15
The number one cause of preventable death after an injury is bleeding. The BMCC Public Safety Department is offering a special training to all who are interested in learning three quick steps to stop the bleed. Participants will gain the ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding and act quickly and effectively to control bleeding. The training will be conducted February 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. |

Public Safety Seeking Volunteer Fire Wardens
BMCC’s Office of Public Safety is seeking faculty and staff to serve as volunteer fire wardens on campus. BMCC fire wardens are provided free training and are called upon during fire evacuations and other emergencies, as well as drills, to ensure the safety of the college community. Fire wardens may help or help locate persons with disabilities who may need further assistance to evacuate.
