BMCC Professor Secures $2.5 Million NSF Grant
BMCC Mathematics Professor Claire Wladis has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to investigate whether online courses provide increased access to STEM college degrees—particularly to students underrepresented in STEM fields. Over a five-year period, Wladis and her team will collect data on roughly 22,000 students at CUNY. They will use the data to investigate whether online courses enable larger numbers of non-traditional students to make faster progress towards their STEM degree and pursue careers.

Grantwriting BMCC Hosts NSF Grantwriting Workshop
More than 40 faculty and staff from Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) from across the country attended a two-day National Science Foundation (NSF) grant-writing workshop in the Fiterman Hall Conference Center on July 29 and 30.The workshop, supported by BMCC and the NSF HSI National Resource Hub for STEM education, included presentations and information on how to best compete for NSF HSI funding.

BMCC Nursing Program Among Seven College Nursing Programs Ranked #6, Statewide
The BMCC nursing program earned a best-value #6 ranking, based on a review of 105 colleges throughout New York state. The ranking is from Nursing Explorer, a resource for nursing graduates preparing to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).

Senegal BMCC Professor Attends Faculty Development Seminar in Senegal
Economics Professor Christine Farias was selected to attend a community college faculty development seminar in Senegal in January. The award was administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers and the West African Research Center in Dakar, Senegal. In July, Farias published an article based on her experiences that discusses the theme of “circularity” in Senegalese daily life and how it provides a useful lens for studying inclusivity and sustainability.

CUNY Hosts Welcoming Event for TheDream.US Scholarship Recipients at BMCC
CUNY hosted its annual welcome event for new recipients of the TheDream.US Scholarship program on August 1 at Fiterman Hall Conference Center. After an afternoon lunch, BMCC Interim President Karrin E. Wilks welcomed students to the college. CUNY Chancellor Matos Rodriguez also spoke at the event which brought together more than 140 CUNY recipients. More than 1,000 students from across the nation watched online. Nationally recognized immigrant rights leader Maria "Gaby" Pacheco as well as TheDream co-founder, Don Graham, the former publisher at the "Washington Post,” also welcomed the students to the program. TheDream.US is the nation’s largest college access and success program for immigrant youth, having provided more than 5,000 scholarships to students with DACA and TPS at more than 75 partner colleges in 15 states and Washington, DC.

FEMA and FCC Conduct Nationwide EAS Test, August 7
This year’s test will evaluate the readiness of the national alerting capability in the absence of internet connectivity. The test will be approximately one minute long, have a limited impact on the public with only minor interruption of radio and television programs, and will be similar to regular monthly EAS tests. Both the audio message and text crawl should be accessible to people with disabilities. The test message will begin at 2:20 p.m. (EDT). For more information click here

Two BMCC Students Named CUNY Women's Public Service Interns
Gender and Women's Studies major Giulia Michieli and Liberal Arts major Jessica Rivera were accepted into the CUNY Women's Public Service Internship Program. The Internship is part of the CUNY-wide Edward T. Rogowsky (ETR) Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs. Selected students work in the offices of New York State legislators on women's issues. BMCC ETR Internship Coordinator, Political Science Professor Heather James, said it is rare to have two BMCC students selected concurrently. "Both women are excellent examples of the types of leaders we have at BMCC," she said.

Proposals for CUNY IT Conference Due September 15
Academics and administrators are invited to submit proposals for the 18th annual CUNY IT Conference, set for December 5 and 6 at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. This year’s conference, “Bridging Gaps,” will explore how technology can help overcome barriers to learning, and novel approaches using technology across CUNY. Presentation proposals are due by September 15 at 5 p.m. For more information, click here.

LRC Learning Resource Center (LRC) Brings Out Students' Strengths
Faculty and staff, let your students know they can sign up to meet with an academic coach who will provide time management, note-taking and test-taking strategies. Students can also ask staff at the LRC, in Room S-510 at 199 Chambers Street, to connect them with a certified BMCC tutor, in person or online. Visit the LRC website for more information and events.

New Work Order System Implemented at BMCC
The Office of Campus Planning and Facilities has launched the Archibus Work Order system, which will allow designated individuals in each campus department to submit work orders and track the progress of the request. For more information, contact the Office of Campus Planning and Facilities by email and include “Archibus Work Order System” in the subject line.

Plaza Reconstruction Project Update
As part of the Plaza Reconstruction project at BMCC, abatement of hazardous materials identified in the underlayment of the existing pavers will be performed during phases of the construction project. This activity, which began January 21, is regulated by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, which ensures the safe and proper removal and disposal of these materials. Abatement notifications posted on all building entrances are part of these requirements and are there to inform the occupants of these activities. The required notices are not meant to alarm building occupants, but to keep everyone informed that the work will be performed in a safe and regulated manner. Bathroom Renovation Update: Phase 5
BMCC has undertaken a comprehensive 26-bathroom renovation project at the Chambers Street building. The project’s focus is to provide greater accessibility, ventilation and temperature control systems. Upgrades include new stalls, floors, fixtures, ceilings and lighting. Renovations have been completed in the north side bathrooms, and those in the south side will be finished in Fall 2019. BMCC has begun Phase 5 (final phase) of renovations, affecting the restrooms located on the far south end of 199 Chambers Street building, on all seven floors. BMCC Criminal Justice Majors Often Transfer to John Jay
In the 2017-2018 academic year, 401 BMCC Criminal Justice graduates transferred to John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY). Donors at least 70½ years old can take advantage of a simple way to satisfy minimum required distribution and benefit BMCC students at the same time. Summer 2019 Recreation Schedule
