Finish Fridays: An Innovative Plan Makes Enrollment Easier
“We are constantly strategizing to streamline the registration and enrollment process," says Kristin Albright Waters, Director of Enrollment Management Services at BMCC. "Our goal is to make a student's first experience with our college a positive one.” In Summer 2018, the Division of Enrollment Management moved closer to that goal by piloting five “Finish Fridays,” an opportunity for students to work one-on-one with counselors and staff to complete their enrollment ‘To Do’ list.
BMCC Library Debuts Labyrinth
The A. Philip Randolph Library hosted Labyrinth in the Library: Creating Contemplative Space for Learning on September 5. The event featured Matt Cook, a faculty member and librarian from the University of Oklahoma, who introduced the library’s new Sparq Meditative Labyrinth. Research demonstrates the benefits of walking labyrinths, including stress reduction, increased focus, and calm. Cook designed the projectable labyrinth, which was installed at BMCC in the center of the Library, using six traditions—Native American (Pima), Celtic, Serbian, medieval, Vedic, and literary (Tolkien). Labyrinth walkers choose one of these designs which is then projected on the carpet; walkers follow the path to the center of the labyrinth and reverse their journey walking back to the start. Available to all BMCC community members, the projectable labyrinth compliments and builds on BMCC’s Mindfulness across the Curriculum: Exploring the Role of Contemplative Practices in Teaching and Learning project which is being led by Health Education Professors Lesley Rennis and Precious Sellars-Mulhern. BMCC Librarian and Professor Jean Amaral says “As a contemplative activity, walking the labyrinth can reduce stress and improve focus, which will be helpful for students in both their academic studies and on the job, as well as for staff and faculty." For more information, stop by the library or email Jean Amaral (jamaral@bmcc.cuny.edu). |
