YOU'RE INVITED: Designing for Success Open Forum, October 16   
BMCC students, faculty and staff are invited to learn about Designing for Success at a Community Forum on October 16 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at 199 Chambers Street, Theatre 2. BMCC’s Designing for Success initiative focuses on key aspects of improving student success: teaching and learning, degree completion, equity, labor market outcomes and institutional excellence. This open forum, led by Interim President Karrin E. Wilks, will welcome dialogue on how faculty, staff and students together create conditions inside and outside the classroom enabling all students to learn and succeed. ​​ ​​    ​​

BMCC Partnership with NYU Opens Doors for Ambitious Students
Through a partnership between two New York University (NYU) programs—the Pipeline Opportunity for Inter-Collegiate STEM Education (POISE) and the Gallatin Undergraduate Initiative for Discovery in Education (GUIDE)—two select groups of BMCC students will gain access to academic resources, mentors and scholarships at NYU. They will also have the opportunity to either attend or observe a class at NYU, while they complete their associate degree at BMCC.

Out in Two Cohort Has High GPAs and Higher Aspirations
On October 11, a ceremony and reception at BMCC's Richard Harris Terrace celebrated the Fall 2018 Out in Two inductees, a cohort of 24 students selected from a pool of 113 applicants. Among other strengths—including their community service and resilience—the scholars hold exceptional GPAs. Nine of the 24 students have a 4.0 GPA, and all but one of the new scholars has a GPA higher than 3.5; the lowest GPA is 3.48.

BMCC Report Reveals High Traffic and Wide Use of Battery Park City Parks  
Approximately 690,000 people visit the 36 acres of parks and public spaces in Battery Park City each year, according to findings from an extensive research project led by a team of BMCC faculty and students. BMCC Social Sciences, Human Services and Criminal Justice Professors Michelle Ronda and Robin Isserles, as well as a team of current and former BMCC students were contracted by Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) in 2017 to conduct the first BPCA Parks User Count & Study 2017-2018. The 130-page report is designed to help BPCA meet the challenges of maintaining the high level of satisfaction that park visitors currently enjoy.

Join the BMCC Team: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, October 14 
Members of the BMCC community, family and friends are invited to register online to join BMCC's team for the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Central Park, October 14. The team will meet at at 8 a.m. at West 67th Street and Central Park West. This year’s theme, "What Unites Us, Ignites Us," celebrates survivorship and helps raise funds for breast cancer research, public education and patient service programs. Faculty Speaker Series “Significant Findings” opens October 25 The BMCC Office of Academic Affairs will present “Significant Findings,” a series of talks by BMCC faculty that covers publicly relevant research and scholarship. The first presentation features Social Sciences, Human Services and Criminal Justice Professor Shirley Leyro discussing her research project, “CUNY American Dream Machine? Exploring Feelings of Belonging and Membership by CUNY Noncitizen Students.” The event is scheduled for October 25 at 7 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace. Italian Heritage Month Features Art, Pesto, City Planning and More
On October 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace, 199 Chambers Street, the BMCC community will celebrate Italian Heritage Month with events including a talk, “Mothers and Daughters in Roman Funerary Art," by Professor Sarah Elizabeth Madole; a presentation, "Rethinking Cities for Gender Equality," by Paula Asturias of AKT Architects; a culinary demonstration by Chef Michele Iammetteo; music by Professor Eugenia Oi Yan Yau and the BMCC Music Majors, and more. Changes to 2019 Winter Tuition Waiver Program  
Due to funding constraints, BMCC will only offer tuition waivers for Winter 2019 in STEM courses. Eligible students who enroll in credit bearing mathematics, computer programming, science, Introduction to Psychology (PSY 100) or Introduction to Multimedia (MMP 100) courses that count towards completion of their listed BMCC degree will be eligible for a tuition waver. Fun Walk Event October 31 On Wednesday, October 31 from 2 to 4 p.m., the BMCC community will participate in a Fall Run/Walk event. Participants will run/walk in Hudson Park from North Moore Street to Leroy Street and back. All participants will receive T-shirts to wear during the activity. Starfish Early Alert System Expands
The Office of Academic Affairs has announced the expansion of Starfish, an Early Alert system that will connect faculty, academic advisors and staff with students in ASAP, the BMCC Learning Academy, MECA and online courses. Office of Public Safety Offers Resources and Services The Office of Public Safety ensures a safe, secure and comfortable learning environment at BMCC through resources including free C.P.R., A.E.D. and First Aid, and Campus-Community Emergency Response Training for faculty, staff and students. Public Safety also trains staff as campus fire wardens. Bathroom Renovations in 199 Chambers Street Building BMCC has begun the next phase of its restroom renovation capital project at 199 Chambers Street. This project will provide greater accessibility and upgrades to restroom fixtures, stalls, floors, energy-saving LED ceiling lights, ventilation systems and temperature controls. Health Benefits Transfer Period in October
The Fall 2018 Health Benefits Program Transfer Period begins October 1 and ends October 31. Health plan changes requested during the Transfer Period will be effective the first day of your first full payroll period in January 2019. During the Annual Transfer Period, employees may transfer into any health plan for which they are eligible, add or drop the Optional Rider and add or drop dependents. To make changes, please contact Human Resources for the correct forms.
