Forum Energizes Community to Redesign Systems for Student Success
BMCC faculty and staff filled Theatre 2 on October 16 for a community forum led by Interim President Karrin E. Wilks, and highlighting the BMCC campus-wide initiative, Designing for Success.

Turning Talent Into a Career
Ytzel Flores Cristiansen ('16, Business Administration), wanted to work in event management, but had never experienced an education in English, before attending BMCC. ESL classes and services such as the Center for Career Development helped her get on track. She graduated with honors and today attends Baruch College, majoring in business communications and psychology. 

An Aspiring Filmmaker Gets His Start 
Timothy Rivera ('17, Video Arts and Technology) got his start at BMCC, and strengthened his skills in programs such as CUNY Start. He learned producing, camera skills and more in his course work, and his film Swipe was nominated for "Best Narrative" at the Tribeca Film Institute. Today he is studying film production at Brooklyn College

BMCC Students Thrive During Summer Residency at Vassar College 
Six BMCC students took part in a five-week residency at Vassar College this past summer through the Exploring Transfer Summer Program, and a reception on October 12 honored their participation.

BMCC Team Makes Strides Against Breast Cancer 
On October 14, about 80 members of the BMCC community, family and friends joined for the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Central Park. This year’s theme, "What Unites Us, Ignites Us," celebrated survivorship and helped raise funds for breast cancer research, public education and patient service programs. “The Breast Cancer Walk is a special event organized by the Women’s Resource Center," said Victoria Apostol-Marius​, Program Coordinator, Women's Resource Center. "It brings the BMCC community toget​her, raises awareness about breast cancer and inspires each of us to live healthy and happy lives.”

Faculty Speaker Series “Significant Findings” opens October 25 The BMCC Office of Academic Affairs presents “Significant Findings,” a series of talks by BMCC faculty that covers publicly relevant research and scholarship. The first presentation features Social Sciences, Human Services and Criminal Justice Professor Shirley Leyro discussing her research project, “CUNY American Dream Machine? Exploring Feelings of Belonging and Membership by CUNY Noncitizen Students.” The event is scheduled for October 25 at 7 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace at 199 Chambers Street. Funding for Students Facing Short-Term Emergencies
BMCC has received funds from the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation to offer emergency grants enabling eligible students to resolve short-term emergencies that would otherwise interrupt their college studies. Petrie grants cannot be applied to tuition cost, college debts or legal representation. Join the BMCC Fun Walk, October 31  The BMCC community will participate in a Fall Run/Walk event in Hudson Park on October 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. Participants will receive T-shirts and run, jog or walk from North Moore Street to Leroy Street and back. Happiness Expo Comes to BMCC on Nov. 7 The BMCC Counseling Center will be hosting the 3rd Annual Happiness Expo on Nov. 7 from 12 to 3 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace at 199 Chambers Street. The purpose of the event is to increase student awareness of the Counseling Center and help them build skills to manage challenging emotions. The event will feature activities promoting healthy living as well as mental health and wellness resources. Happiness stations will be on display to demonstrate positive ways to practice health and well being in daily living. There will also be a group mindfulness meditation session from 12:45 to 1 p.m., a salsa lesson and a grand finale dance contest. Faculty Invited to Submit Proposals by November 10 for CUNY Games Conference 5.0  BMCC faculty who design games or interactive activities for their classes are invited to submit a proposal—by November 10—to present​ a poster or game demo at the CUNY Games Conference 5.0, set for January 18, 2019 at BMCC. This event, sponsored by the CUNY Games Network, will focus on game-based pedagogies in higher education and include workshops on how to modify games for the classroom, incorporate elements of play into critical thinking activities and more.

Changes to 2019 Winter Tuition Waiver Program  
Due to funding constraints, BMCC will only offer tuition waivers for Winter 2019 in STEM courses. Eligible students who enroll in credit bearing mathematics, computer programming, science, Introduction to Psychology (PSY 100) or Introduction to Multimedia (MMP 100) courses that count towards completion of their listed BMCC degree will be eligible for a tuition waver. Office of Public Safety Offers Resources and Services The Office of Public Safety ensures a safe, secure and comfortable learning environment at BMCC through resources including free C.P.R., A.E.D. and First Aid, and Campus-Community Emergency Response Training for faculty, staff and students. Public Safety also trains staff as campus fire wardens. Bathroom Renovations in 199 Chambers Street Building BMCC has begun the next phase of its restroom renovation capital project at 199 Chambers Street. This project will provide greater accessibility and upgrades to restroom fixtures, stalls, floors, energy-saving LED ceiling lights, ventilation systems and temperature controls. Health Benefits Transfer Period in October
Now through October 31, BMCC employees may transfer into any health plan for which they are eligible, add or drop the Optional Rider and add or drop dependents.
