BMCC Now Offers Textbook-Free Criminal Justice Degree
Funded by a 2016, two-year Open Educational Resources (OER) grant from Achieving the Dream, BMCC faculty have redesigned 20 courses to create a criminal justice associate degree program which students can complete without having to buy a textbook, saving altogether an estimated $2,500.

Social Studies for Secondary Education Major Meets Growing Demand Starting Fall 2019, students at BMCC will have the option of earning an Associate in Arts degree in Social Studies for Secondary Education, through the Teacher Education department.

Results of Staff and Graduate Surveys Available to BMCC Community
The BMCC Office of Institutional Effectiveness has just posted on the BMCC website, the 2017 Staff Survey reports (Quantitative and Qualitative) and a report on the Survey of BMCC Graduates from 2017-18 Academic Year. The Staff Satisfaction Survey reflects a 20 percent response rate, a slight increase over the previous year, and involved 326 staff members. The perception of job satisfaction reflected in the survey is based on factors such as salary, benefits, working environment, colleagues and location.​ The 2017-18 Graduates Survey included responses from 995 individuals, about 24 percent of the total population. One finding indicates that 96 percent of those surveyed would recommend BMCC to friends and relatives, up two percent from last year. Ways to Give: Coats, Toys and a Resource That Fights Hunger on Campus
Now through December 18, the BMCC Veterans Resource Center and the Organization for Student Veterans will conduct its 4th Annual Toy Drive. Members of the BMCC community are invited to donate new toys for families in need by contacting the Veterans Resource Center at (212) 220-8000 ext. 5363. BMCC students, faculty and staff are also invited to donate gently used coats and other clothes as part of the 30th Annual New York Cares coat drive. BMCC Panther Pantry: A Helpful Resource for Students
If anyone in the BMCC community is aware of a student experiencing food insecurity, support is available through the BMCC Panther Pantry, located in Single Stop at 199 Chambers Street, Room S-230. "The holidays are a time for families to come together but also a difficult time for many people," says Deborah Harte, director of Single Stop at BMCC. "The Panther Pantry provides nutritionally balanced, nonperishable food for students in need. We also help students connect with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. We are in the process of developing our donation policy—making sure that it is in compliance with Food Bank guidelines—so we are not asking for food donations at this time. Please check back to our website for how to donate food items in the future. We are very appreciative of the BMCC community's support for this vital resource for our students."

Extended Hours and Services Support Students as the Semester Ends
From Quiet Study areas to computer labs, tutoring and more, BMCC is expanding services now through December 20 to help students successfully complete their finals and end-of-semester activities. The BMCC community is asked to remind the students they work with or teach, of these additional supports.

Gain Certification in Mental Health First Aid, January 4 BMCC faculty and staff are invited to attend a free training on January 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace, 199 Chambers Street, to gain a three-year certification in identifying signs of anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses in students, friends and others. Provided through ThriveNYC, the training is organized by Professor Shirley Leyro and Counseling Director Cicely Horsham-Brathwaite. Space is limited. BMCC Upgrading Website, Limited Access Through January 15
In early 2019, the Office of Public Affairs will launch an updated version of the BMCC website featuring a new Content Management System (CMS) to improve user experience for students, faculty, staff and the public. During this final phase of content migration, changes to the current website will be limited to those that are critical, time-sensitive and received by December 15. Then, through January 15, 2019, editorial access to department, office and faculty pages will be “frozen.” For urgent changes, please contact the Office of Public Affairs at (212) 346-8501 or publicaffairs@bmcc.cuny.edu. Once the new BMCC website is launched, department web liaisons, faculty and staff will be trained to update their department pages, faculty pages or to enter BMCC calendar events. Submit Proposals for 2019 Diversity and Inclusion Conference by January 7
BMCC faculty are invited to submit proposals by January 7, 2019, to present at the CUNY Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Conference, Minding the Gap: Retaining and Sustaining the Academic Community set for March 29, 2019 at the CUNY Graduate Center. For more details, visit the event's website here.

Resources for Supporting Students: Two Updated Brochures The Office of Public Affairs has released the new Comprehensive Academic Programs brochure, which provides degree program information, and Student Success Programs brochure, which highlights offices and services from financial aid to mentoring programs. Printed copies are available on campus and downloadable versions are on the BMCC website.

BMCC Concert Choir Performs at UNIQLO, December 22 and 23 The BMCC Concert Choir, comprised of BMCC music majors, has been selected by the retail chain Uniqlo as this year's seasonal performance group, December 22 and 23 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Uniqlo, 666 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10103.
