More Than 200 Students Inducted into BMCC Chapter of National Society of Leadership and Success
Having completed a semester-long induction process, 226 students are inducted into BMCC's newly inaugurated chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) on December 10 in Theatre 1 at 199 Chambers Street. In taking the oath, NSLS members make a commitment to strive for academic excellence, participate in community service and grow personally and professionally.

2018 BMCC Toys for Tots Toy Drive Largest Ever
Representatives from the United States Marine Corp Reserves visited BMCC to collect toys collected by the BMCC Veterans Resource Center (VRC) staff through its annual Toys for Tots toy donation drive. BMCC is one of the largest drop off locations in Manhattan for the program, which collects new, unwrapped toys for economically disadvantaged children. Veterans Resource Center, Manager Wilfred Cotto said the 2018 drive was the most successful since BMCC first began participating four years ago. Elizabeth Vasquez, VRC College Assistant, was responsible for coordinating all aspects of this year’s donation drive. Among this year’s donors to the BMCC effort were; Rapid Ratings, the US Attorney General Office NY Southern District, STRIVE, NYC Office of Actuary,Citi,Aaptiv and AKAM(r) Associates, Inc.

posse BMCC Programs Help High School Graduate Earn Posse Scholarship
Congratulations to Salimata Dansoko, a senior at High School for Health Professions and Human Services in Manhattan, for being selected as a Posse Scholar for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Out of approximately 3,400 high school nominees, Salimata participated in three interviews and was selected as a member of University of Wisconsin-Madison Posse 9 and earned a full-tuition, four-year scholarship worth around $200,000. Salimata was selected for demonstrating positive team skills, academic persistence, and a commitment to making a difference both in her own life and in your community. “When I first found out, I was very overwhelmed,” said Salimata, who plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Fall 2019. “I started screaming.” Salimata participated in BMCC’s Upward Bound Project and College Now Program. She said both programs offered her the opportunity to grow and prepare for the next stage of her life. “These programs helped me build my self-confidence and reminded me not to be fearful,” she said. “Going through College Now was a great experience and it was a good way to help me transition into college.

Winners Announced at BMCC Film Festival
The winners of the BMCC semi-annual student film festival held December 13 include: Isaiah Black, Best Screenplay; Gabriel Chiriboga, Best Narrative Film; Andrew Davenport, Best Documentary; Seiya Kudo, Best Editing; Janae Laster, The Michael Vincent Rosen-Pipitone Rising Star Award; Jefrey Lewis Jr., Best Director; Thomas James Ludena, Best Sound; Victoria Martinez, Best PEM (PSA/Experimental/Music Video); Nanako Senda, Best Animation; Dajoir Thomas, Best Acting, and Shiu Tszyue, Best Cinematography. The festival was founded in 2013 by students in the Video Production Club who wanted to have a more official and prominent event to showcase their work.

College Discovery Hosts FYE Convocation
On December 17, more than 80 first-year freshman in the BMCC College Discovery (CD) program took part in a convocation in Richard Harris Terrace at 199 Chambers Street to celebrate their completion of the First-Year Experience (FYE)—a series of 10 workshops tailored to build their academic skills and familiarize them with resources at BMCC. "The convocation underscored the camaraderie and engagement that was always present in FYE," says CD Director Pedro Perez. "Activities centered on team-building and reinforcing topics covered in the 10 workshops, such as course planning and advisement and how to achieve academic success. Based on our de-briefing and what we saw at the convocation, we think it was a great success."

coats Donate Gently Used Coats and Clothes Through December 21
Now through December 21, BMCC students, faculty and staff are also invited to donate gently used coats and other clothes as part of the 30th Annual New York Cares coat drive. Submit Proposals for 2019 Diversity and Inclusion Conference by January 7
BMCC faculty are invited to submit proposals by January 7, 2019, to present at the CUNY Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Conference, Minding the Gap: Retaining and Sustaining the Academic Community set for March 29, 2019 at the CUNY Graduate Center. For more details, visit the event's website here.

ACEN Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing to Visit BMCC
Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) will host a site review for continuing accreditation of its Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S) Nursing Program by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The BMCC community and the public are invited to meet the site visit team and share your comments about the program in person at a meeting scheduled from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on February 6, 2019. The meeting is scheduled in Room S-748, at 199 Chambers Street Building.
Justice-Involved Students Symposium Examines Justice-Involved Students, Proposals Being Accepted
BMCC will be hosting the Re-Entry/Entry Symposium: Pedagogy, Programs, and Policies that Support and Sustain Justice-Involved CUNY Students on May 3, 2019 on the 14th Floor of Fiterman Hall. The symposium is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and will focus on educating justice-involved —formerly incarcerated— students and the unique needs and challenges of students with justice involvement. There is a call for proposals on the themes of: pedagogy, barriers, distinct populations, support and equity, inclusion and justice. Deadline to submit proposals is January 21, 2019.
Comprehensive Academic BMCC Panther Pantry: An Important Resource for Students
Students experiencing food insecurity can find support at the BMCC Panther Pantry, located in Single Stop at 199 Chambers Street, Room S-230. "The holidays are a time for families to come together but also a difficult time for many people," says Single Stop Director Deborah Harte. "The Panther Pantry provides nutritionally balanced, nonperishable food for students in need. We also help students connect with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. We are currently developing our donation policy, in compliance with Food Bank guidelines, so we are not asking for food donations at this time. Please check back to our website for how to donate food items in future. We are very appreciative of the BMCC community's support of this vital resource for our students."

Earn Free Certification in Mental Health First Aid, January 4
BMCC faculty and staff are invited to attend a free training on January 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace, 199 Chambers Street, to earn a three-year certification in identifying signs of anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses in students, friends and others. Provided through ThriveNYC, the training is organized by Professor Shirley Leyro and Counseling Director Cicely Horsham-Brathwaite. Space is limited. BMCC Website Upgrade in Process Now Through Early 2019
The Office of Public Affairs will soon launch an updated version of the BMCC website featuring a new Content Management System (CMS) to improve user experience for students, faculty, staff and the public. Through January 15, 2019, editorial access to department, office and faculty pages will be “frozen.” For urgent changes, please contact the Office of Public Affairs at (212) 346-8501 or publicaffairs@bmcc.cuny.edu. Once the new BMCC website is launched, department web liaisons, faculty and staff will be trained to update department pages, faculty pages or to enter BMCC calendar events. The BMCC community's continued support and collaboration is greatly appreciated during this transition.

The Office of Public Affairs has released a new Comprehensive Academic Programs brochure, which provides degree program information, and Student Success Programs brochure, which highlights services from financial aid to mentoring programs. Printed copies are available on campus. Downloadable versions are on the BMCC website.

Deer Oaks Employee Assistance Program encourages the BMCC Community to be safe this holiday season and choose a designated driver. If you find yourself in need of a ride, call a cab, Uber, or Lyft and send the bill to us for reimbursement up to $45.00 (excludes tip) once per year. The process is simple and confidential. Donors at least 70½ years old can take advantage of a simple way to satisfy minimum required distribution and benefit BMCC students at the same time. Donate up to $100,000 from an IRA directly to BMCC Foundation without having to pay federal income taxes.
