Asknes BMCC Mourns the Loss of Nursing Professor Edna Asknes
BMCC is mourning the loss of a vital community member, Nursing Professor Edna Asknes, who died on September 13. Professor Asknes contributed in important ways to the academic excellence and supportive environment that BMCC is known for. Her expertise was in maternal-newborn nursing and she taught professional issues in contemporary nursing practice among other topics. Professor Asknes helped plan Diversity Day in 2014, and was a teaching fellow in the 2015 cohort of the BMCC Teacher Academy. She published her findings on teaching quantitative literacy to enhance critical thinking skills for undergraduate nursing students in the 2017 Journal of Nursing Education and took part in a 2018 faculty leadership cohort at BMCC. At the 2020 BMCC Faculty Convocation, Professor Asknes co-presented on incorporating culturally responsive pedagogy into a course syllabus, and she is quoted as a faculty expert in a 2020 Hechinger Report article that highlights the struggle of a student parent. In January 2021, Professor Asknes presented at the BMCC conference, Recharge, Reconnect, Restart, sharing her insights into teaching in a pandemic. She is described as having been a kind, modest and brilliant human being, supportive and reassuring to students and colleagues alike. In her Legacy obituary, colleagues note that Professor Asknes guided hundreds of nurses into the profession through the sound, ethical standards of care for pregnant moms and their children. A student remembers that Professor Asknes encouraged them to engage in critical thinking, not just “surface studying.” She will be greatly missed.
